Biggie Small

It is so funny when I watch my two dogs interact. The small dog Chico is about 10 pounds and the big dog Pablo is about 70 pounds. I know that folks say that small dogs have huge egos and suffer from the napoleon complex, but Chico is truly the protector of the house. He is loud, rambunctious, playful and ironically caring. Pablo is more laid back, stubborn, playful, and also very caring. I have noticed that Chico will bark until he feels the threat is gone but Pablo will just sit and give you a look as if he were saying “yeah cross me if you want.”

Chico and Pablo are different breeds, sizes, colors and have quite different temperaments but they make it work. The only thing these two have is common is that they are male dogs with four legs.

We had a dog visit our home and of course Pablo was curious but did not cause a fuss however, Chico did not want any parts of the visiting dog. Chico went after this dog like he was in the fight of his life and had to protect his home base. But what amazed me was that after the other dog left, Chico then inspected Pablo to ensure that he was ok. He would not move away from Pablo until he knew that all was clear.

We initially got Chico to keep Pablo company but as time went passed, we quickly realized that the relationship was more important. Chico brought companionship to Pablo that we could not give him. While Pablo loves his human interaction, he appreciates his love from Chico. Look at your relationships and think about your differences and similarities. Now ask yourself does those things matter. Probably not because it’s all love!
